A proactive Bassetlaw focus for health and social care

Bassetlaw Care and Repair Scheme

Care and Repair Launch

Keeping vulnerable people living at home independently – that was the aim of an exciting new scheme launched at Retford Hospital on Friday 12th September 2003.

Bassetlaw Care and Repair Scheme will be piloted for a two-year period across the district thanks to a £59,000 funding package from health and social services.

A brand new Ford Connect van, equipped to allow trained crew to tackle small household repairs and install minor pieces of equipment, will soon be seen around the area.

“National and county-wide research tells us that this is exactly the kind of low level support that older and other vulnerable people need,” explained Louise Newcombe, Chief Executive of Bassetlaw Primary Care Trust.

The contract for the scheme was won by DYNAH? (Do You Need A Hand?), an agency with a strong track record of providing innovative community-based schemes across a wide-spectrum of activity.

“We were looking for an agency with imaginative ideas about how to deliver the scheme in what is a very rural area, and which could demonstrate real creativity in linking in with other relevant initiatives,” added Mrs Newcombe, chair of the Bassetlaw Partnership for Health which commissioned the scheme.

Jobs involving joinery, glazing, security and insulation as well as maintenance work on such items as carpets, minor electrical problems and gardening can be undertaken, and DYNAH? will refer clients on to other relevant agencies when appropriate.

Research carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation nationally, and as part of the Nottinghamshire Social Services’ Best Value Review of Independence of Older People, has revealed that practical support in the home at an affordable price is a high priority.

And with accident prevention a major concern for the county as a whole, the Care and Repair Scheme looks like being a real winner.
