Summary of
Healthy Living Centres Bid
Young
Persons Mobile Health Resource…
is
led by the County Council working in
partnership with other agencies including the voluntary sector.
The project has an emphasis on the rural coalfield
areas, with opportunities to extend into deprived areas of rural
East Bassetlaw.
Flexibility
of access is a high priority, involving day and evening
working. Whilst aimed at the needs of young people the mobile resource
also benefits other sections of the community and supports the
work of other agencies.
The
project provides information and support to allow 13-19 year
olds to adopt healthy lifestyles/behaviour concerning, smoking,
drugs issues, teenage pregnancy and physical activity.
It also allows young people to link with other youth
and community service provision.
Promoting Young Peoples Health
in Informal Settings
In recognition that
many isolated young people are reluctant to make use of centre
based and mobile provision it is proposed to invest in additional
workers whose role would involve providing health information,
support, advocacy and sign posting to specialist service
providers.
Promoting Physical Activity
Among Young People
This
will seek to promote physical activity through the provision of
accessible active leisure pursuits for young people.
The project will utilise a blend of youth work and sport
leadership to motivate young people and develop programs of
activity which reflect their interests.
There will also be opportunities for young people to
undertake courses in activity leadership.
Life Education in Bassetlaw
This
project will deliver health promotion and drug prevention
education to all young people aged between three and ten in
primary schools by means of purpose-built high tech mobile
classrooms with specially trained educators.
As well as developing individuals to take responsibility
with confidence for their own health there are also wider
community benefits from involving parents and presenting a
community focus to the problems resulting from substance misuse.
Active Leisure Referral Project
This will aim to
promote physical, mental and emotional health through the
provision of active leisure opportunities for isolated individuals
and groups, with a particular emphasis on older people, young
people and women. It
will build upon good practice developed through the multi-agency
pilot project based within 4 GP practices in Retford.
Primary health workers will be the principal source of
referrals. A referral
guide will match individuals with an activity appropriate to their
interests and needs.
Capacity
Building and Credit Union Development
This
project concerns the development of two distinct, yet mutually
reinforcing strands. The
Community Capacity Building aims
to address the development needs arising from the other projects
in this bid such as volunteer recruitment and training and budget
development and management. This strand of the project will develop a centre of expertise
through which individuals or groups will be able to access the
level of development of support they require.
Credit
Union activity has been developing in communities across Nottinghamshire's
coal field areas and has been supported in Bassetlaw through
social and economic regeneration strategies.
It has the potential to make a significant contribution to
help improvement among the lower income groups by addressing the
root course of debt, optimising disposable income and developing
social capital.
Network of Safer Play Areas
This
project aims to develop a network of safer play areas using the
involvement of local people in the design and construction of the
play areas. In
addition to providing an improvement to the environment and social
fabric of local communities, well designed and constructed play
areas will make an important contribution towards a co-ordinated
accident prevention strategy.
Healthy
Activity Network for Young People
A
network of locally based Healthy Activity Networks will be
established for young people to focus on health promoting
activities.
They will facilitate for individual’s access to health,
health promoting and skills development services and activities,
promoting a culture of self care, empowerment and independence.
Community development and involvement is an integral part
of these activities and sustainability of the project will be
addressed by training volunteers as lay health workers.
